In 1998, the Ashland High School golf team won the State Championship for the second time in school history. Head coach Loren Green assisted by Paul Dienstberger, who had his team at State for the third time in four years, gave the MVP award to all six Varsity starters: Chris Yoder (37), Steve Paramore (37.4), Bobby Castor (37.7), John Locke (38.5), Adam Houston (39.5), and Kevin Priest (40.3). Jeff Mohrman also lettered placing first.

The team had a phenomenal season with a 16-0 record, a first place in nine of ten invitationals, and the school’s best ever 18-hole score of 284. During the final month they swept away opponents in the tournaments. The A’s won the OHC by 40 strokes, the Sectional by 28 strokes, and the District by 20 strokes. At the State Tournament on the first day they blistered the Scarlet Course with a 305, which was on a record setting pace. On Saturday they cruised to an eight shot win over Cleveland St. Ignatius, when the Arrows recorded a 625 by Bobby Castor (152), Chris Yoder (154), John Locke (158), and Steve Paramore (161). In the end they had won 13 of the 14 18-hole events.

Many individual achievements highlighted their romp. Steve Paramore shot a school record 66, plus he was the OHC medalist. Chris Yoder was the District Medalist and First Team All-Ohio. Bobby Castor was the State Runner- up Medalist and First Team All-Ohio. John Locke was First Team Northwest District and Second Team All-Ohio. All six starters made the OHC team.

In their careers Yoder, Castor, and Locke were four-year lettermen. John Locke went to State all four years and was twice Second Team All-Ohio. Bobby Castor (1999) and Steve Paramore (1997) were the State Medalists. Coach Green took four teams to State and also had two runner-up finishes.
